“HEAR THEM ROAR,”
shot entirely at the
Endangered Animal Rescue Sanctuary (EARS) in
sunny Citra, Florida, is a compelling documentary about rescued lions and tigers and the care and compassion bestowed on them by sanctuary owners Gail Bowen and Jaye Perrett.
About EARS
Within its 25 acres, the Endangered Animal
Rescue Sanctuary (EARS) houses over 28 Big Cats, including 4
lions, 19 tigers, and 5 cougars. Wolves and a couple of fennec
foxes also share the reserve. Less exotic, but no less welcome,
are the donated chickens and numerous dogs and house cats, ranging
in ages from 10 to 22 years old.
Gail Bowen had eight Big Cats when she began EARS in 2001 along
with former animal rescue officer and friend Jaye Perrett. After
being viscously attacked by a Rottweiler and nearly losing the bottom
of her right leg, Perrett joined EARS, finding refuge
in this unique Big Cat sanctuary while embracing the love that the tigers bestow
upon her every day.
A typical day at EARS
"HEAR THEM ROAR" captures a typical day at the sanctuary as volunteers and students feed the Big Cats and keep their cages clean. The students get hands-on training or credit for school or post-graduate work. The day begins with a morning feeding, followed by hand-washing
each cage and then hosing it down with bleach. Then the
disbursement of vitamins and more food, either chicken or red
meat. The Big Cats' obvious preference is for red meat. They often get aggressive
if another cat looks their way while they're being fed!
A match made in cat heaven! (A word from producer Suzanne Corso of Samcor Productions, Inc.)
"HEAR THEM ROAR" is a Big Cat documentary I had to make, since loving the Big Cats since I was a child. Completely enthralled when I arrived at the sanctuary
to start filming, I soon realized that EARS is based on one thing: LOVE. "HEAR THEM ROAR" captures all the love and trust between
Big Cat and human -- a remarkable thing to see, and something never to be taken for granted.
Bowen and Perrett’s compassion was immediate and is reflected
in the eyes of the alluring cats. A match made in cat heaven!
As we began to roll film, my director, Helena Webb,
and cameraman/editor Christopher Voos captured surreal footage
as Perrett and Bowen hand-fed raw meat and chicken to the tigers
and lions respectively. It was a particularly poignant scene, as
Perrett had had a serious problem with Duke, her favorite tiger. After weeks
of not eating, and losing over 300 pounds, Duke's exam by the local
vet revealed that he had a horrific infection. Duke grew sicker and sicker. Finally, Perrett took matters into her own hands. She
built a small Plexiglas enclosure outside Duke's cage, and she and Duke slept together
in this air-conditioned nest every night for over 4 months. Duke
took his antibiotics with horse meat while Perrett rubbed down his
neck four times a day with cold rags. When Duke got stronger,
he was given daily bubble baths. Duke recovered. But he recovered
into a spoiled Big Cat who still sleeps with his care-giver almost
every night! Take a sneak peek at "HEAR THEM ROAR."
